A typical skylight usually lasts for around 8 to 15 years approximately, depending on various factors. Ost importantly the Quality of the product determines its lifetime, and here we only deal with the VELUX skylights due to extra-ordinary material and production quality. Another significant factor that affects the life is the way in which you install your skylight, so make sure to hire a professional for installing the skylight.
The VELUX windows being highly universal can be placed anywhere, may it be a flat tiled roof, or a slopping corrugated one or even a straight wall. One thing to be kept in mind is that the VELUX window should never be higher than the highest part of the roof so it does not stand out.
A skylight which is basically a type of window that is installed on roofs in order to capture the sunlight and illuminate/warm up the inside of your living space, as well as it is also used to provide ventilation to make the environment more comfortable and more relaxing for you.
Skylights offers lot of benefits to the users, starting from the very basic purpose of a skylight which is to illuminate or add natural sunlight to your living space. Skylights are also a great source of fresh air and cross ventilation; they help in saving energy costs for lights and heating and they also add to the aesthetics of your room by providing a great view of the nature.
The major difference between skylights and roof windows is that skylights are slightly more versatile and adaptable. Skylights can be mounted to a curb, which allows for more installation options. Roof windows, on the other hand, must be installed in the same orientation and plane as the surrounding roof at a minimum 15˚ pitch. The VELUX skylights are also compatible with a vast range of accessories like blinds, insect screens, flashings etc.
It is not advisable to leave your VELUX window completely open when its raining since it would cause the water to come inside the room. In fact, you can keep the window partially open to restrain water from coming in but allowing the fresh air to enter the space. You can also completely lose the window while keeping the vents open for cross ventilation.
VELUX windows can be regarded as waterproof since they are equipped with weather-resistant seals to make sure that all elements including water are kept outside and your living space remains warm and dry. But this is only possible if you keep your window closed during rains, because if the window is open then water might seep in through some way.
There is a marked difference between the fixed skylight and the manual skylight. The fixed skylight is a non-openable type of skylight which only allows the natural sunlight to enter the living space and improve the aesthetics of the room, whereas the manual skylight is an openable type skylight allowing for ventilation as well, and in which the opening/closing operation needs to be performed manually by winder handles or rods.
